Flight Test Evaluation of an Unmanned Aircraft System Traffic Management (UTM) Concept for Multiple Beyond-Visual-Line-of-Sight Operations
نویسندگان
چکیده
This study evaluates a traffic management concept designed to enable simultaneous operations of multiple small unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) in the U.S. national airspace system (NAS). A five-day flight-test activity is described that examined the feasibility of operating multiple UAS beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) of their respective operators in the same airspace. Over the five-day campaign, three groups of five flight crews operated a total of eleven different aircraft. Each group participated in four flight scenarios involving five simultaneous missions. Each vehicle was operated BVLOS up to 1.5 miles from the pilot in command. Findings and recommendations are presented to support the feasibility and safety of routine BVLOS operations for small UAS. متن کاملInitial Study of An Effective Fast-time Simulation Platform for Unmanned Aircraft System Traffic Management
Small unmanned aircraft systems are envisioned to play a major role in surveilling critical assets, collecting data, and delivering goods. Large scale operations are expected to happen in low altitude airspace in the near future, where many static and dynamic constraints exist. High sensitivity to wind and high maneuverability are unique characteristics of these vehicles, which bring great chal...
متن کاملIn-Trim Flight Investigations of a Conceptual Fluidic Thrust-Vectored Unmanned Tail-Sitter Aircraft
The feasibility of using a stand alone Fluidic Thrust-Vectoring (FTV) system for the purpose of longitudinal trim of an unmanned aerial vehicle is the focus of the research presented in this paper. Since the fluidic thrust vectoring requires high pressure secondary air to deflect the engine exhaust gases, this research also provides an analytical toolset for preliminary sizing of a suitable sec...
متن کاملA Survey of UAS Technologies for Command, Control, and Communication (C3)
The integration of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) into the National Airspace System (NAS) presents many challenges including airworthiness certification. As an alternative to the time consuming process of modifying the Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs), guidance materials may be generated that apply existing airworthiness regulations toward UAS. This paper discusses research to assist in the...
متن کاملCooperative Electronic Chaining Using Small Unmanned Aircraft
When using a team of small unmanned aircraft, with no satellite communications, the operational range of the team is typically limited by line-of-sight communication constraints between an individual aircraft and a ground station, and not the endurance range of the individual aircraft within the team. By using electronic chaining to form a multi-hop communication link using the team, the overal...
